Spa Valley gala success

THE Spa Valley Railway, a leader of high-quality classic traction events, stages more special diesel days than most other major heritage railways.

The August 2-5 diesel gala featured an impressive timetable, with a wide selection of locos and trains, including several rare and unusual workings (RM Aug, p91).

Deltic Preservation Society’s No. 55019 made its long-anticipated debut on the Spa Valley Railway at the summer diesel gala. Here, it is top-and-tailing with Class 33 No. 33201, heading 2T16, the 13.35 from Eridge-Tunbridge Wells West at Lealands on August 3. JAMIE SQUIBBS

Stars of the event were the two first-time visitors: Deltic Preservation Society’s No. 55019 Royal Highland Fusilier, which missed the 2017 event, and Class 17 ‘Clayton’ No. D8568, from the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway.

Class 25 No. D7612 was making its third visit from the South Devon Railway.

The ‘Rat’ is staying for three months and will operate regularly on green timetable days, as well as a Class 25 running weekend on September 22-23.
