New old-style station building for Waunfawr

by

CONSTRUCTION of a station building in the style of the original structure is expected to begin at the Welsh Highland Railway’s (WHR) Waunfawr station in September, with completion anticipated next spring.

The original building survived in a ruinous state until revival of the WHR in the 1990s. Prior to construction of the new platform at Waunfawr, the derelict building was dismantled with a view to eventual reconstruction, but the large stone blocks ended up being incorporated into a retaining wall.

The striking appearance of the Welsh Highland Railway’s new Caernarfon station, with the exterior cladding and glass in place – unique in the British narrow gauge steam railway scene – is very clear in this August 2 picture. Fitting out will be progressed through September, with the building likely to come into use in December for ‘Santa’ trains, and be fully open for the 2019 season. RICHARD TUPLIN

However, some smaller stone was kept, and may be employed in the new building, the design for which has been prepared by Rob Chambers, the architect for the new and non-traditional station at Caernarfon.
