Work starts on single-chimney ‘9F’ at Grosmont

STAFF at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s (NYMR) Grosmont MPD have wasted no time in getting to grips with the restoration of newly arrived BR ‘9F’ No. 92134, which arrived from the East Lancashire Railway (ELR) on April 23.

The 1957-built 2-10-0 is owned by Howard Self, and relocated from Bury to Grosmont by mutual agreement owing to the ELR’s inability to continue work on the loco until the spring of next year.

Single-chimney ‘9F’ No. 92134 arrived at Grosmont on April 24 in readiness for the completion of its restoration. The work is expected to take around a year to complete. ANDREW JEFFERY

Much had already been completed on the loco’s bottom end, and the boiler passed its steam tests at LNWR Heritage, Crewe, in November. However, the ELR’s prior commitments would have meant the
single-chimney ‘9F’ would not have returned to action until mid-2020 at the earliest.

Since entering the works at Grosmont the right-hand motion has been removed to allow the crank pins, bushes and rods to be measured, NDT tested and cleaned up. The rods off the driving wheels have been rubbed down, undercoated and fresh coats of black gloss applied, with the frames being similarly treated.
