North Wales Coast upgrades complete

A £50MILLION infrastructure project on the busy North Wales Coast route between Chester and Holyhead has been completed by Network Rail, Richard Horner reports.

The project included resignalling between Shotton and the Conwy Valley to offer greater resilience and reliability; replacement of track and ballast at Flint, Mostyn, Rhyl and Abergele & Pensarn; and installation of new crossovers and station improvements, including a new platform, shelters, LED lighting and bike racks at Abergele & Pensarn.

Grade II-listed Abergele & Pensarn signalbox, built by the LNWR in 1902, is one of six heritage signalboxes saved for posterity after resignalling of the North Wales Coast route. RICHARD HORNER

Six remaining ex-London & North Western Railway (LNWR) mechanical signalboxes, plus the portable ’boxes at Rushcliffe Hall and Tyn-y-Morfa crossing and associated signalling, have been replaced by a modular Siemens system.

The Rhyl workstation, which now oversees the resignalled line, is relocated to the Wales Regional Operating Centre (ROC) in Cardiff.
