Partnership calls for more investment in the Midlands

PAN-regional transport partnership Midlands Connect has called for greater investment in the region’s railways to match the growth ambitions of its towns, cities and businesses.

Maria Machancoses, of Midlands Connect, in giving evidence to the Transport Select Committee’s inquiry into rail infrastructure investment, said all available statistics show Government investment in railways outside London lags far behind that in the capital.

Midlands Connect, which represents local authorities and businesses, has called for greater investment in rail transport across the Midlands, including Midland Main Line services to Nottingham. BEN JONES

Midlands Connect (MC) recommends sub-national transport bodies, such as Transport for the North, give greater assistance to Government in long-term planning and decision-making processes for rail investment, and has asked for assurances from Government that regional evidence for the development of transport investment programmes will be considered effectively.

MC also believes there is a strong case to partially open the East Midlands Hub station at Toton to National Rail services in the 2020s (ahead of the planned opening of HS2 Phase 2b in 2033), and is working with East Midlands Councils and the Department for Transport on long-term options for improved Midland Main Line services, aligned with HS2, for vital classic compatible services through Leicester.
