Better facilities at Lincoln – and more to come?

A NEW waiting room, modern toilets, a coffee shop and a microbrewery will open at Lincoln Central this summer as part of a £2million improvement scheme.

The programme has already delivered a new cycle hub, refurbished roof, station forecourt and car park entrance, and work is now focusing on the restoration of the Grade-II listed building, reopening original archways, restoring the original ground floor sash windows, and repairs to original brickwork.

A Network Rail study into improving the Lincoln to Nottingham route includes long-term plans to replace Newark’s flat crossing with a bridge over the East Coast Main Line, although this is regarded as a complex and costly solution because of the site’s proximity to the River Trent. Ticket gates will also be installed in a new location to help improve the flow of passengers to and from trains.

In the longer term, Network Rail is considering the possibility of providing an extra platform at Lincoln and eliminating the famous flat crossing at Newark.

Both ideas form part of an NR study into improving capacity and journey times on the Nottingham to Lincoln route, although they are not expected until the 2030s.
