First Caledonian Sleeper Mk 5s arrive in the UK

THE first five carriages of an order for 75 new vehicles for the Caledonian Sleeper arrived at Dollands Moor on January 12 via the Channel Tunnel behind DB Cargo Class 92 No. 92042.

Three days later, the five carriages, sandwiched between German barrier wagons, were moved up to Wembley Yard behind Rail Operations Group Type 3 No. 37884.

These carriages – Nos. 15001/2, 15101 and 15301/2 – are the five pre-series vehicles that were tested at Velim, in the Czech Republic, and are due to enter traffic in October.

The carriages are painted shells and need fitting out internally. This will be undertaken in the UK, possibly at Polmadie depot, where the carriages arrived on January 16. Fully fitted carriages will arrive from Spanish manufacturer CAF later in the year.

Caledonian Sleeper (CS) says the introduction of the new carriages will take place in October, six months later than planned, following delays in production.
