Hurricane blows in for Foxfield showstopper

IRONSTONE, coal, steel and power generation were among the industries represented at the Foxfield Railway’s (FR) summer steam gala on July 16-17 as ‘Austerities’ rubbed shoulders with Avonsides for this annual piece of steam theatre.

Two visiting locomotives had been brought in for the event, one of which – Avonside 0-6-0ST Cranford – has a long association with the Staffordshire line.

The former Staveley Ironworks locomotive (1919/1924) spent 40 years at the railway between 1971 and 2011, although it never ran there. Its restoration, which had begun at Foxfield in the 1990s, was completed at the Appleby Frodingham Railway, in Scunthorpe, earlier this year.
