GWSR on countdown to Broadway opening

THE Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway’s long-held dream of returning steam to the Cotswold honeypot of Broadway is just over 11 weeks away from becoming a reality as this issue of The RM goes on sale.

As the opening day of Good Friday (March 30) draws ever closer, the Broadway project team has been working flat out to ensure the new station is fit to receive its first passengers –
58 years after a train last served the town.

Looking at the site today it is hard to believe this is an entirely new station; BR flattened the original back in 1963. At the time of writing, in early December, the transformation of the site into a period Great Western country station was almost complete.

The new station building has got its corrugated steel roof and canopy, and the scaffolding has been removed. Externally, the building, which is longer than the original, looks complete, but the internal fitting out has yet to be done, and it is likely only the station booking office and toilets will be complete by March 30.
