Kenilworth station opening delayed – for the third time

THREE opening dates have been set and three opening dates have passed by for the new station at Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

When first approved, the opening was planned for December 2016, but after various delays, meaning construction didn’t begin until July 2016, the opening date slid back to August 2017.

When it became evident that date could not be met, opening was put back to December 2017 to coincide with the start of the winter timetable. However, in early December, came the news the third date would be missed, with February 18 pencilled in as the new opening date.

The station is being delivered by Warwickshire County Council, whose joint managing director Monica Fogarty has pointed the finger of blame at the Department for Transport.

She said: “The department is unable to supply the train and drivers in order to meet the December opening date, and this is beyond disappointing for the people of Kenilworth.”

In an interview on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire radio on December 5 Ms Fogarty insisted the station “was complete, looks amazing and that the facts speak for themselves”. She added: “That said, two more months, having waited 53 years, is not long.”
