SCOTRAIL started running electric trains between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street on December 10, although diesel units will continue to operate well into 2018.
ScotRail introduced two seven-car sets of Siemens Class 380 EMUs from its fleet following the completion, approval and testing of the delayed electrification project over the last few weeks.
The full electric service is expected to start in the spring, once sufficient Class 385 EMUs are available from Hitachi Rail Europe.

In the meantime, six-car Class 170 DMUs will continue to run alongside the electric trains.
ScotRail Alliance managing director Alex Hynes described it as “another key stage” in the plan to build the best railway Scotland has had.
