Giants steam at Kirklees gala

THE Kirklees Light Railway’s September 9-10 Annual Steam & Diesel Gala Weekend had a Giants on the Line theme.

The final train of the Kirklees Light Railway’s gala at Shelley. Locos are (from the front) No. 9 Winston Churchill, No. 8 Hurricane, Kirklees LR’s 2-4-2 Katie, 0-6-4T Badger, 0-4-4-0T Hawk and 4w-4wT Owl. The two smaller visiting locos did not participate in this operation. ANDREW DENNISON

The event featured visits by Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway’s Davey Paxman 4-6-2 No. 8 Hurricane and YEC 4-6-2 No. 9 Winston Churchill, Bassett-Lowke Class 20 4-4-2 Prince Edward of Wales from Rhyl, and Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway’s ‘Little Giant’ Synolda.

Visitor numbers were reported as very good despite periodic rain, which adopted monsoon proportions as the traditional gala-ending Shelley Or Bust! multi-headed train left Clayton West. However, the sun shone as it arrived at Shelley!
