£13million station project begins at Maghull North

WORK started on the construction of a new £13million Merseyrail station at Maghull North in mid-September.

It is located between Maghull and Town Green stations on the Ormskirk branch of Merseyrail’s Northern Line, and is expected to open to passengers in May 2018.

The new station will serve a nearby new housing development of 370 homes, with more housing planned for the area in the near future.

Facilities will include a staffed station building and ticket office with toilet, platform waiting shelters, step-free access with lifts, a footbridge between both platforms and the station building, and a 156-space car park, with future provision for electric vehicle charging points.

£340m investment

The station is being funded through the Government’s Local Growth Fund (LGF), Merseytravel and the Homes and Communities Association, which previously owned the land on which the station will be built.

It forms part of a wider £340m investment by Network Rail and the Liverpool City Region in rail improvements over the next three years.

Coun Liam Robinson, chairman of Merseytravel, said: “The start of work on Maghull North station is fantastic news for the area.

“The facilities will give local residents more travel options and play a big part in helping the on-going development of Maghull.”

Martin Frobisher, Network Rail LNW route managing director, said: “With passenger figures set to double during peak periods by 2043, the upgrade to the railway across Merseyside is vital to transform train travel for passengers in the future.”
