AN EXTENDED station building and full platform canopies are just two of the improvements the East Lancashire Railway (ELR) hopes to deliver as part of its planning application for the redevelopment of Rawtenstall station.
The application for the £600,000 project was submitted to Rossendale Borough Council on September 1, with the ELR hoping the improved facilities will not only add to the overall visitor experience, but also serve the local community, too.
Central to the application is the construction of a new a 37m-long, fully accessible building extending from the end wall of the current building along the platform. The extension would accommodate a cafe, kitchen, activity/community room, tourist information centre, and toilet and baby changing facilities.

The new building would in turn allow the current Buffer Stops Bar to expand thanks to the relocation of the toilet facilities.
