Four centuries on… Mayflower to honour the Mayflower

DAVID Buck’s Thompson ‘B1’ 4-6-0 No. 61306 Mayflower will pay homage to the ship of the same name next September when it heads a commemorative railtour from London to Plymouth and Penzance to mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers to the Americas.

Steam Dreams’ ‘Mayflower 400’ will leave London Paddington at 10.00 on September 14 (subject to changes), taking the Eastern Region interloper over the Great Western Main Line to Plymouth. From there the train will continue on over Brunel’s famous Tamar Bridge and into Cornwall, arriving in Penzance around 21.30.

‘B1’ No. 61306 Mayflower was in action for Steam Dreams on September 26 when it worked a tour from London Victoria to Bournemouth to the Swanage Railway. The 4-6-0 climbs the grade across Corfe Common, bound for Swanage, with West Coast Type 4 No. 47802 on the rear. STEPHEN GINN

Passengers will then spend the next two days in Devon or Cornwall, before returning to London on September 17. 

The ‘B1’ is expected to work three additional round trips from Plymouth to Par and back on September 15, as well as some local branch line trips the next day.
