Leeds-built locos show their mettle at Blaenavon gala

LOCOMOTIVES from two of Leeds best-known manufacturers stole the show at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway’s (P&BR) gala on September 13-15.

The event also included a homecoming of sorts for one of the participants.

The Built in Leeds-themed event provided a formal ‘welcome to the fleet’ to ex-East Moors Steelworks (Cardiff) Hunslet ‘48150’ class 0-6-0ST No. 18 Jessie (1873/1937), which recently joined the P&BR fleet following  overhaul at Barry. 

Resident Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST Rosyth No. 1 and visiting Hudswell, Clarke 0-6-0 Harold (Illingworth) charge up the grade from Blaenavon High Level to Furnace Sidings with a service train on September 15. BOTH: ALISTAIR GRIEVE

It was joined in service over the weekend by the Middleton Railway’s Hunslet 0-6-0ST Brookes No. 1 (2387/1941) and Hudswell, Clarke 0-6-0ST Illingworth/Mitchell (1208/1916), from the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway.
