‘G5’ construction making steady progress in Shildon

THE day when a North Eastern Railway Worsdell ‘O’ class 0-4-4T (LNER ‘G5’) steams again in the North East of England is edging closer as the Class G5 Locomotive Company (G5LC) continues to make progress on a new-build re-creation of No. 1759 at its Shildon base.

Much of the recent work has focused on the manufacture, delivery or fitting of smaller components, such as the tank support brackets, which have now been fitted to the frames.

Also recently fitted by Ian Howitt was the motion bracket, which was set up and aligned accurately in the time-honoured method with piano wire. Mr Howitt has also fabricated the locomotive’s sandboxes, which are now in Shildon ready for fitting.
