THE first major structure to be built at Euston as part of HS2 has received planning permission from the London Borough of Camden.
The eye-catching London Underground (LU) ventilation shaft and substation –nicknamed the ‘sugar cube’ – will be covered with more than 13,000 glazed white terracotta tiles, drawing inspiration from historic LU stations, such as nearby Great Portland Street.

The four-storey cube has been designed by architects Weston Williamson + Partners, with William Matthews Associates. It will contain a substation, electrical equipment and a ventilation shaft for the Northern Line.
The new shaft will be on Stephenson Way, behind Euston Road, on the site of Wolfson House, which is currently being demolished.
