RM, DRS and Virgin plan third Class 37 charity special

AFTER the collaboration with Virgin Trains and DRS in running two successful charity special trains that have raised more than £50,000, a third train has been confirmed.

‘The Independent Yorkshireman’ has been planned for September 3 and will start at Chester hauled by a Class 57/3 calling at Crewe before running via Alsager and Stoke so as to continue to Stafford using the new Norton Bridge flyover.

Here the train will pick up and reverse direction with a pair of DRS Class 37s taking the train right through to Scarborough, running via the new down fast line at Norton Bridge, Crewe Independent lines, Crewe Coal Yard, Warrington Bank Quay (pick up), Chat Moss, Manchester Victoria, Hebden Bridge, Wakefield Kirkgate, Church Fenton, York (set down) and Scarborough.

Return route from Scarborough and York is via Knottingley, Doncaster, Sheffield, Hope Valley, Hazel Grove, Altrincham, Northwich, Greenbank, Acton Bridge, Warrington BQ (sd and rev), Helsby, Chester (sd rev), Crewe, up independent lines, Stafford (sd) and Crewe.

Tickets will go on sale on June 1 and a further update on contact numbers will appear near the end of May. Prices are: Adult standard £85, child (5-15) £20, adult first £125, child £30.

Child bookings must be booked with the ticket of a fare-paying adult and cannot be booked separately under any circumstances. Under 5s are free, but cannot occupy a seat.

First class includes breakfast, tea, coffee and a hot evening snack. The train will have a buffet car and also real ale bar.

Charities being supported include the Mental Health Foundation.
