Traffic lights at level crossings make sense

I HAVE just been reading your January editorial, in which you suggest that the flashing level crossing lights should be replaced by standard junction lights.

Hooray! This is something I have been thinking for years.

To my mind, a steady green light would remind all users that the crossing is there, even when it’s clear to cross. With the existing ‘no light’ indication, new users will miss it and regulars could well get into a routine of ignoring the crossing.

I am convinced the flashing lights mean “Hurry Hurry!” to most motorists, regardless of the colour displayed – completely the wrong message while, as you say, a steady red triggers their normal pavlovian reaction to stop!

I think traffic lights at level crossings are a bad idea. I have no car, but I see many vehicles ignoring yellow and even red traffic lights, many actually speed up when they see lights changing. What is needed is more education of drivers and stiff penalties - automatic ban, perhaps? David Thompson, Halifax.
