Level crossings: Traffic light solution was rejected
By: Web Editor
I NOTICE that some recent correspondents consider that conventional traffic lights should be used at level crossings rather than flashing lights. I disagree.
There is a fundamental difference between the two types of light. Conventional (steady) lights displaying red may be passed by emergency services vehicles, proceeding with appropriate care. Flashing lights, however, impose a mandatory stop on all vehicles. It would be unsafe to have a fire engine or police car ignore the lights at a level crossing, whatever the circumstances.
This, I believe, is the reason such lights exist.

An interesting point, but the Highway Code says flashing amber can be passed
if no pedestrians are crossing – does this not create even more confusion? (see letter on the right) – Ed.

I beleive that the current systm is ok. motorists ignore traffic lights too. perhaps full barriers are needed everywhere? Is the risk of cars in a queue on the crossing when barriers descend common? Motorists should not be on the yellow box markings anyway!!
