British Railways Steam Locomotive Shed Allocations 1948-1968

Compiled by Roger Griffiths

THIS compact disc contains details of all known BR steam locomotive allocations from January 1, 1948 to August 4, 1968.

The information came from official sources in late 1968 and thus might differ slightly from other published sources of similar information. The author is therefore keen for any amendments to be passed on to him via the editor.

A great strength of the disc is a fully comprehensive list of all BR steam depots and sub-sheds, listed both alphabetically and numerically. So, for example, it is possible to see which sheds had the code 40E, and when – and which code changes Colwick underwent, and when. This is the case for the majority of the nation’s 600-plus sheds and sub-sheds… from Aberayron to York Layerthorpe.

An interesting bonus is the inclusion of some depot codes that never were: In the very earliest days of BR, it was intended that there would be an East Anglian Region, in which case the Eastern Region shed codes would have been 40A to 46F instead of 30A to 40F. The idea was stillborn, but for historical interest’s sake, the ‘ghost’ code range 42-46 is given in brackets where relevant.

Note: Microsoft Excel and Word programmes are required to read this CD.
