Book review: January 2012
By: Web Editor
Here is this month's book review of new titles for The Railway Magazine, Jan 2012.
Reviews this issue include:
• The Branch Lines of Warwickshire
The Branch Lines of Warwickshire
By Colin G Maggs
READERS who became interested in railways after the local government reorganisations of the early 1970s may CALENDARS find it hard to believe that Birmingham city centre used to lie within Warwickshire, which is why this book
contains details of the Monument Lane-Harborne branch as well as more obvious
ones such as Hatton to Stratford and Rugby to Leamington.
Each of the 17 branches featured is given its own chapter, containing an
introduction, a route diagramand a selection of black & white photographs.
The price of £16.99 may seem a lot for a medium-format softback with no colour,
but the author has unearthed some fascinating illustrations, including a
number dating back to the 1800s, and anyone even vaguely interested in the county’s railways will find the book useful.
Amberley Publishing, Cirencester Road, Chalford, Gloucs GL6 8PE; 248x172mm;
160pp; softback; ISBN 978-1-84868-346-4; £16.99.
