Alan Pegler: a true legend
2 May 2012
I MET Alan Pegler in the most unusual of circumstances. I had travelled up from London on the ‘Highland Chieftain’ to Inverness where, by arrangement, I slumbered in the signalbox for a couple of hours before boarding an empty stock Inter -City land cruise train at around 5am.
Health & safety... French-style
4 April 2012.
IT is often joked that although health & safety rules emanate from Europe, Britain is the only nation that actually imposes them. I would like to share the liberal attitude of the French to health & safety experienced during a recent journey on an SNCF train.
Bored no longer!
4 April 2012.
I USED to be a regular reader of The Railway Magazine for many years, but became rather bored with the content of the magazine, and so haven't purchased it for some years.
Depot visits:We’ll soon need a passport & visa!
7 March 2012.
I RECENTLY went on an organised visit to Bedford depot as I wanted to take a picture of it. No chance!
Amazed by the number of grounds next to railways
7 March 2012.
WHAT an amazing article on the links between railways and football. I had absolutely no idea that some of the clubs mentioned had ever been members of the Football League, let alone that there were so many grounds lying next to railway lines!
GWR did try to place broad gauge locos elsewhere
1 February 2012.
THE article on ‘safeguarded’ locos that were then wantonly destroyed (Dec) was informative, but states that destruction of the two broad gauge locos at Swindon in 1906 was done by Stanier whilst Churchward was on leave. This was not the case.
Level crossings: Traffic light solution was rejected
1 February 2012.
I NOTICE that some recent correspondents consider that conventional traffic lights should be used at level crossings rather than flashing lights. I disagree.
Traffic lights at level crossings make sense
4 January 2012.
I HAVE just been reading your January editorial, in which you suggest that the flashing level crossing lights should be replaced by standard junction lights.
Control staff: Damned if they do and...
4 January 2012.
THANK you for the informative article on the East Coast Control Centre last month, the kind of thing your magazine does so well.
