Barrow Hill snatches its greatest victory from the jaws of defeat
2 May 2012
HOW wonderful to meet so many old friends – and make so many new acquaintances – at Barrow Hill in April. Thanks to all of you who came to our stand and made yourselves known. It was especially gratifying to hear so many kind comments about the magazine.
Thanks for saving an A3, Alan. I shall be forever grateful to you

NOT to have had a Gresley A3 Pacific in preservation would have been unthinkable. Even if the group that had tried to save it but failed had been able to buy another member of the class before the final one was scrapped in 1966, Flying Scotsman would by then have gone the same way as the pioneer A4 Silver Link – reduced to a pile of scrap metal.
Right that NR has pleaded guilty but wrong to remove all crossings

I AM delighted to report that your magazine has bucked the national trend and recorded one of the largest annual circulation increases in its history – 6.8%. This takes our average sale per issue from 34,186 to 36,523 and makes The Railway Magazine one of the Top 50 best-selling men’s specialist news-stand titles in the country.
Hooray for common sense. What a shame we must wait until 2026

Good news and not so good on the rail front
7 December 2011.
THE ‘A to Z’ of titled trains souvenir issue received a wonderful response from readers – so much so that we would have been justified in calling it an ‘Encyclopaedia of Titled Trains’.
Is NR trying to snuff out steam as well as fires?
2 November 2011.
CHARTER promoters are reluctant to attack Network Rail in public. Not only do they know which side their toast is buttered on but have no proper legal redress against the infrastructure giant as their contractual relationship is with the operator and not regulated by the Office of the Rail Regulator.
A warm welcome to our express trains souvenir
5 October 2011.
THE reason for this special edition came about during an office discussion in which it was pointed out that only two or three books have been published over the years on the subject of named trains and that there appeared to be no one place where every such express had been brought together into a single reference point.
Rising passenger figures: This is one of the reasons
7 September 2011.
THE other day, I had cause to call in at Narborough station, a small semi-urban location in Leicestershire.
Has time come for return of the night watchmen?
3 August 2011.
THE theft of £60,000 worth of metal castings from the workshops of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway (see Headline News) is just the latest in a long line of similar reports it has been our miserable duty to publish over recent years.
