A spotter’s lament
By: Web Editor
I WAS on Edinburgh Waverley station one recent summer Saturday with my eight-year-old son when it dawned on me that there were no trainspotters. I couldn’t get over it.
When I was my son’s age, the station was heaving with spotters, especially on a summer Saturday.
I tried to explain about them to my son and he just said: “Did they all have laptops, dad?” “Er, no son they just had paper and pencils.”
“What’s the point of that when we’ve got laptops to do it nowadays?” he asked.
I decided it was time to leave.

Trainspotters , not welcome on most stations , if any ? . Add all the up to date tech gear . Sad for people of a certain age , but a sign of our times .
