Cranford steams at Scunthorpe

AVONSIDE 0-6-0ST Cranford (1919/1924) made a triumphant return to working order at the Scunthorpe base of the Appleby Frodingham Railway in mid-April, bringing to a close a restoration which began in earnest in the 1990s.

The former Staveley Ironworks locomotive made its first tentative moves at the TATA steelworks site on April 9 after what Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society (AFRPS) spokesman Chris Theaker described as an overhaul involving “much time and grief and expense”.
